![]() ![]() (That's why he pulled Isaac into this mission in the first place, he already knew Isaac was Ellie's ex but chose to get him anyway for the sake of the mission, if Norton was already that irrational about love he would have just left Isaac to die on the moon colony instead of giving him a gun and risking his and Carver's lives to take Isaac with them.) But the Markers fed those thoughts directly into his head, "he's trying to get you killed, he wants to steal your gf, he wants you to die just so he can steal your girl, you can't trust him, he's trying to make you die just because he wants to take her from you". ![]() Knowing the sheer stakes at hand, he probably could have focused on putting his feelings aside and doing what they had to do. So the Markers went for Norton's biggest potential source of irrationality - his romance with Ellie. Norton doesn't seem to have a previous Marker guilt trauma the way Isaac, Carver, and Stross did, and he's also a hardened military loyalist so he's probably not going to be affected by religion the way an already-Unitologist person would be. We know the Markers love tormenting humans by forcing them or manipulating them into ruining their own lives with signal-induced irrationality and then rubbing in that irrationality as guilt to make the madness even worse. So the Tau Volantis Markers decided to go for the comparatively easy prey, the Earthgov soldiers - Carver (who does have his own hallucinations that you can see as Player 2 in co op), but also Norton (whose POV we never get to see). I originally thought so too but I was recently replaying the game and realised that it wouldn't have naturally been that way, it was the result of the Moon/Marker signals affecting the characters.Įllie seems to be immune to the Markers and Isaac already successfully resisted his own Marker in DS2. ![]() ![]() A lot of fans hated DS3's writing because of the love triangle, pretty much everyone thought it was asinine and irrational, and unbearably juvenile. ![]()
